Singer-songwriter Sarah Morris has a way with songs about the highs, and lows of love. With a voice both cozy and surprising; demure and daring, Sarah performs a range of songs from classic country to jazz standards, sprinkled with her own take on pop. Her own writing is evocative – a kind of melodic poetry that can make you sing along even when you don’t know the song. Sarah balanced her classical training at Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, with a 4 year immersion in Nashville’s singer-songwriter community, allowing her voice to transition easily from genre to genre, creating a sultry sound that’s all her own. Now firmly replanted in the Twin Cities, Sarah has performed at venues such as The Dakota, The Fine Line, and Aster Café, to name a few.
2011 found Sarah recording two albums: Grateful Moon, produced by internationally renowned jazz guitarist David Becker, features Sarah’s distinctive take on 7 “classics”; from the soulful “Baby, I Love You”, to a samba-driven “On The Street Where You Live”. The lone original tune is the title track, and it fits right in amongst the re-imagined standards. Released in May 2011, Grateful Moon is available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, and Bandcamp.
In July of 2011, Sarah began recording an album of original material, working with singer-songwriter-producer Kevin Steinman. The 8 songs in Lonely or Free come from two distinct places: the questions that spring from wandering and wondering where you belong, and the answers that are found in those life events that utterly change who you are. The beauty of falling in love, the complexities of marriage, and the aftermath of a broken-heart all find their way onto Lonely or Free, culminating in Sarah’s ode to her baby boy, “Ends With a Prayer”. Lonely or Free was pre-released to iTunes in December 2011, and will officially be released on March 7th, 2012.
